The Davison Factor: What Fury's Old Trainer Brings to Joshua's Corner — and Where It Runs Out

The 30-second version

  • ✓Davison trained Fury from his 2018 comeback to 2019: Seferi, Pianeta, Wilder I (draw), Schwarz and Wallin.
  • ✓They split before Wilder II; under SugarHill Steward, Fury became a front-foot fighter and stopped Wilder in seven.
  • ✓Hearn has confirmed Davison will be involved in Joshua's camp for December 11.
  • ✓The value: habits that don't change — how Fury resets, how he uses the clinch, how he manages a camp.
  • ✓The limit: the Fury Davison trained moved and boxed; the Fury since 2020 leans, walks forward and imposes size.

● The short answer

Ben Davison trained Tyson Fury through his comeback, from his June 2018 return through the Wilder draw in December 2018 and wins over Tom Schwarz and Otto Wallin in 2019. They split before the second Wilder fight; under SugarHill Steward, Fury changed into a heavier, front-foot fighter and stopped Wilder in seven in February 2020. In September 2026 Eddie Hearn confirmed Davison will be involved in Anthony Joshua's camp for their December 11 fight. Davison knows Fury's habits, rhythms and moods better than almost anyone — but most of what he saw up close belongs to the back-foot Fury of 2018–19, not the one Joshua will face.

Boxing is full of stories about trainers who switched sides, but rarely in a fight this personal. Ben Davison was in Tyson Fury's corner during the most remarkable comeback of the decade. On December 11 he will be helping the man across the ring.

What Davison built

When Fury returned in June 2018, after two and a half years out, Davison was the young trainer beside him. The results tell the story of that partnership: Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta in 2018, then the first Wilder fight in December — a draw in which Fury outboxed the hardest puncher in the division for long stretches and got up from the canvas twice. In 2019 came a second-round stoppage of Tom Schwarz and a points win over Otto Wallin through a badly cut eye.

That Fury moved. He boxed on the back foot, switched stances, made Wilder miss and used his reach to stay out of danger.

Why it matters that they split

Before the Wilder rematch in February 2020, Fury and Davison parted ways. Under SugarHill Steward, Fury came back a different fighter: heavier, front-foot, leaning his weight on Wilder in every exchange. He stopped him in seven. That is the version of Fury the division has seen since — the one who beat Wilder again in 2021, flattened Dillian Whyte with an uppercut and pushed Usyk to a split decision.

What Davison can give Joshua

Habits that don't change with a trainer. How Fury resets after an exchange. How he uses the clinch to steal time. What he does in the last minute of a round he's losing. How he behaves in fight week — and how to stop that behaviour from getting inside Joshua's head.

A realistic picture of Fury's engine. Few people have watched Fury train through a full camp. Davison knows what his body did at the end of hard weeks.

Where it runs out

The Fury who will walk out in Cardiff is 38, six years into a style Davison never trained, and two fights into a comeback. Some of Davison's most detailed knowledge describes a fighter who no longer exists. The risk for Joshua's camp is preparing for Fury's past. The opportunity is that Fury knows Davison knows — and a fighter who is busy proving his old coach wrong is a fighter thinking about the wrong man.

A trainer can tell you what a fighter used to do. Only the fight tells you what he does now.
