A 39-0 matchup lost one of its zeroes on Saturday night. Floyd Schofield beat Lucas Bahdi over 12 rounds in Chicago, took the WBA lightweight belt, and had to survive a disputed moment late to do it.

The fight

Bahdi, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, was ruled down late in round three after a check left hook sent him onto the ropes. The momentum was Schofield's for most of the fight, and the cards show it: 119-108, 116-110 and 115-111, all for the 24-year-old. The scare came in round 11, when Schofield was ruled down after a right hook. Replays suggested his foot had been stepped on, a call that was disputed but did not change the result.

What each man takes away

Schofield, now 20-0 with 13 knockouts, wins his first world title at the lightweight limit, in a division still shaped by the absence of Gervonta Davis. Bahdi enters the record books with a first loss after 20 straight wins; he had been ranked in the top 10 of both the WBA and the IBF, and a rematch has not been announced.

The same night

The card also produced one of the year's bigger upsets at flyweight: Sergio Mendoza stopped Ricardo Sandoval in round five (the Spanish-language coverage is here (in Spanish)). Our preview of the card has been corrected to reflect the late change of opponent.

The lesson

Schofield was never behind on the cards, but one doubtful knockdown put the late rounds under pressure. Bank rounds early. A fighter who wins the first eight rounds clearly can afford a bad minute in the eleventh; one who wins them narrowly cannot. In your own training, practice the opposite scenario too: how you box when you are up on points and tired.

The zero went on the other side of the ledger. The belt went with the fighter who had built a lead big enough to survive a bad moment.
