Mike Tyson's Peekaboo: The System That Weaponized Fear

Cus D'Amato didn't teach a teenager to box. He built a machine out of a scared kid.

Peekaboo wasn't a guard. It was a philosophy — make the small man terrifying by turning defense into offense.

Mike Tyson's Peekaboo: The System That Weaponized Fear

● The short answer

Peekaboo is the defensive system Cus D'Amato built around Mike Tyson: hands high and tight by the cheeks, constant head movement, and explosive bursts from a low, coiled stance. It let a 5'10" heavyweight slip inside bigger men and unload with bad intentions. The genius wasn't the guard — it was pairing relentless head movement with immediate counter-punching, so defense became attack.

Everybody remembers the power. Almost nobody understands the system underneath it.

A guard built to attack

Peekaboo put the gloves high and tight, the chin tucked, the body coiled low. From there, Tyson didn't block and admire — he slipped, weaved, and exploded the second he was inside. Defense and offense became the same motion.

For a heavyweight giving up reach to nearly everyone, that was the whole game: get past the jab, make them miss, and make them pay in the same breath.

The bob wasn't to survive the punch. It was to earn the right to throw one.

The fear part

D'Amato's real work was mental. He convinced a terrified Brooklyn kid that fear was fuel, that the man across from him was more scared. The peekaboo gave that belief a delivery system.

Strip away the myth and Tyson is a case study: a complete system — stance, movement, mindset — that turned a disadvantage into the most frightening prime in heavyweight history.
